Categories of computer and its uses

Categories Of  Computer and Uses

Computers can be categorized in several ways. For example, some computers are designed for use by one person, some are meant to be used by groups of people.
Computers can be categorized by their power, which means the speed at which they operate and the types of task they can handle.

Computer For Individual Users

Most computer are meant to be used by only one person at a time. Only one person can work with the machine at any given moment. The six primary types of computers in this category are:
  • Desktop Computers
  • Workstations
  • Notebook Computers
  • Tablet Computers
  • Handheld Computers
  • Smart Computers
These systems are called personal computers. Personal computers are called microcomputers, because they are among the smallest computers created for people to use.

Desktop Computers

Desktop computers is the most common type of personal computers that is designed to sit on a desk. These systems you will see all around you, in schools, homes and offices. The main component  of a desktop personal computer is the system unit. its too big to be carried around. They can be used to communicate, produce music, edit photographs and videos, play sophisticated games and much more.

Workstations

A workstation is a specialized, single user computer that has more power and features than  a standard desktop computers. Workstations often have large high-resolution monitors and accelerated graphics handling capabilities, making them suitable for advanced architectural or engineering design, modeling, animation and video editing.

Notebook Computers

A notebook computer is a battery or AC powered personal computer. People frequently set these devices on their lap, so they are also called Laptop computers. These amazing devices generally weight less than eight pounds or three pounds.

Tablet PC's

A tablet is a wireless, portable personal computer with a touchscreen interface. The tablet form factor is typically smaller then a notebook computer, but larger then a smartphone. They are lighter and can accept input from a special pen  called a stylus or a digital pen.

Handheld Computers

A handheld computer is a computer that can conveniently be stored in a pocket and used while you are holding it. A popular type of handheld computer is the personal digital assistant(PDA).

Smart phones

A smartphones is a mobile phone that includes advanced functionally beyond making phone calls and text messages. These features can include web and email access, special software such as personal organization , or special hardware such as digital camera or music players.

Computers for Organizations

Some computers handle the needs of many users at the same time. These powerful systems are most often used by organizations, such as business or schools , and are commonly found at the heart of the organization's network. The largest organizational computers support thousands of individual users at the same time, from thousands of miles away.  Many organizational computers are general purpose systems that support a wide variety of tasks.

Network Servers

Most organization's networks are  based on personal computer. Individual users have their own desktop computer, which are connected to one or more centralized computers, called network servers. A network server is usually a powerful personal computer with special  software and equipment that enable it to function.

Mainframe Computers

Mainframe computers are used in large organization such as insecure companies and banks, where many people frequently need to use the same data. In a traditional mainframe environment, each user accesses the mainframe resources through a device called a terminal.

Minicomputers

First released in the 1960s, minicomputers got their name because of their small size compared to other computers of the day. The capabilities of s minicomputer are somewhere between those of mainframe and personal computers, so minicomputers are often called midrange computers.

Supercomputers

Supercomputers are the most powerful computers made and physically they are some of the largest. These systems can process huge amounts of data, and the faster super computers can perform more then one calculations per second.
